Petit began his career at ES Arques-la-Bataille before joining Arsène Wenger's Monaco team at the age of 18. Soon after, he made his debut and appeared in the 1989 Coupe de France final.
Petit established himself as a regular for Monaco, playing as a left-sided or central midfielder. He won the Coupe de France with Monaco in 1991 and also appeared in the European Cup Winners' Cup final in 1992. In his final season at Monaco, 1996-97, he captained his team to the Ligue 1 title.
Petit joined Arsenal in June 1997 for £2.5 million, rejoining former Monaco manager Arsène Wenger. Wenger moved Petit from central to defensive midfield, pairing him with fellow Frenchman Patrick Vieira.
The French duo formed a midfield partnership that brought instant success, as Petit won the Premier League title and the FA Cup in his first season with Arsenal. Petit made 118 appearances for Arsenal and scored 11 goals, including a stunning drive from outside the area against Derby County (which was also the winning goal) during the 1997-98 season, before leaving for Barcelona.
