at the FIFA World Cup, the greatest players from Africa ever

A look at five of the best players from Africa to ever play in the FIFA World Cup.

In just six days, the globe will gather in the stunning cities of Qatar for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Five countries, led by Senegal, Cameroon, Tunisia, Ghana, and Morocco, will continue to represent Africa.

Regrettably, players from other African powerhouses like Nigeria, Egypt, Algeria, and Cote d'Ivoire will watch the international spectacle from the comfort of their homes.

African footballer of the year Sadio Mane, Ghana's Mohammed Kudus, Morocco's Achraf Hakimi, and Cameroon's Maxim Choupo-Moting are all expected to make their continent proud in Qatar.

Pulse Sports Nigeria looks at five of Africa's greatest World Cup players ahead of the competition's start on Sunday.

5. Cameroonian Samuel Eto'O

The renowned Cameroonian made his World Championship debut in France in 1998 at the age of 17, making him the tournament's youngest participant.

After the Indomitable Lions were unsuccessful in qualifying for the 2006 edition, he continued to compete in the 2002, 2010, and 2014 editions.

Despite Cameroon's lackluster performance at the World Cup, Eto'O's three goals place him among the top African scorers in the competition's history.

4. Nigerian Jay Jay Okocha

When it comes to Nigeria's World Cup participation, Rashidi Yekini and Ahmed Musa, the country's all-time leading scorers, will always be remembered.

But Jay Jay Okocha and his performances at the French version in 1998 continue to rank among Africa's most famous performances at the international gathering.

Okocha was a standout performer for Nigeria, even though they didn't advance very far in the tournament. His brilliance against Denmark in the round of 16 is still a major talking point.

He is regarded as one of the most talented players to emerge from the continent, and he still holds the record for the most completed dribbles (15) in a World Cup game. Senegal's El-Hadji Diouf

During his playing years, the former Liverpool player and African footballer of the year qualified for just one FIFA World Cup, but he left a lasting impression.

The Teranga Lions of Senegal made their World Cup debut in 2002, shocking everyone by becoming the newest country from Africa to advance to the round of eight.

The contest against the reigning champions, Les Bleus, is still ongoing. With his superb dribbling and unflinching attitude, Diouf proved to be a pain in France's side.

He initiated the opportunity that resulted in the unexpected victory by Bouba Diop, another superstar from Senegal.

Following his performances in Korea and Japan in 2002, Diouf joined Liverpool, and he served as an inspiration for the Lions as they stunned the world before exiting at the quarterfinal stage following an extra-time loss to Turkey.

2. Ghanaian Asamoah Gyan

While Asamoah Gyan is best known for his missed penalty against Uruguay at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, he was one of Africa's top performers there.

The Black Stars first made an appearance in 2006, and four years later, they earned a historic quarterfinal berth thanks to Gyan, Africa's all-time leading scorer at the World Cup.

Ghana lost the quarterfinal match against Uruguay because Gyan notoriously missed a crucial last-second penalty against Luis Suarez's team.

For Ghana in three World Cup competitions, Gyan set an African record with six goals.

Roger Miller from Cameroon

One of Africa's all-time greatest players, Roger Miller, who dominated the 1990 World Cup, is at the top of this list.

At the Italia 90, Miller, who is 38 years old, inspired Cameroon to the quarterfinals with an incredible four goals.

With Miller and his objectives as their inspiration, the Indomitable Lions became the first country from Africa to make it to the final eight.

Miller set a record for the oldest player to play in a World Cup match at the time, which stood until 2014, when Faryd Mondragon, then 43, broke it in Brazil.

At 42 years old, Miller became the competition's oldest scorer when he scored in the USA's 1994 match against Russia.
