Many Ghanaian women in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have acquired the knowledge, skills and financial tools from Ecobank Ghana to make important day-to-day financial decisions such as bookkeeping, basic bookkeeping, budgeting, saving and investing. This training was organized to mark Ecobank Day, a flagship annual corporate social responsibility program to give back to the communities in which banks live, work and serve.
Speaking at the UPSA Learning Center in Accra, Ecobank Ghana Chief Executive, Mr. Dan Saki, said that the focus of this year's Ecobank Day is increasing financial literacy and financial inclusion, especially for women and youth in marginalized communities. “We recognize that financial education and financial inclusion are life-changing issues and that is why we take them very seriously. We are committed to helping increase financial literacy, which will in turn drive financial inclusion in our local community.”
"Ecobank Ghana is committed to playing an important role in our community as a significant contributor to the development of the African continent, in line with our overall corporate vision," he said. Mr. Dan Saki explained that financial literacy is the ability to use the knowledge and skills acquired through education and training to manage financial resources effectively, ideally for a lifetime of financial well-being.
And he says financial inclusion means having access to useful and affordable financial products and services to meet someone's needs — payments, savings, personal and small business loans, and insurance. He added that financial education and financial inclusion are key factors in reducing poverty and increasing wealth. But he said 68 percent of sub-Saharan Africans are illiterate and 62 percent of the unbanked live in rural areas, with 40 percent of them young people aged 15 to 24. 74 percent of the underserved have at most primary school education.
He mentioned that as part of the bank's contribution to reducing these statistics, the Ecobank family in Ghana held four events simultaneously in Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi and Tamale to provide knowledge and skills to people in the SME sector to manage their finances effectively. He announced that due to unforeseen circumstances, it would be held at Manya Krobo at a later date.Mr Sackey also said the training was another opportunity to give women and young people easy access to open accounts remotely, receive and make payments and send funds to loved ones without having to visit a branch.
