How Erik ten Hag, the manager of Manchester United, would be affected by Cristiano Ronaldo's interview
According to Dutch football analyst Marcel van de Kraan, Cristiano Ronaldo's heated chat with Piers Morgan may have strengthened Erik ten Hag's hand as manager of Manchester United.
One of the few excerpts from Ronaldo's interview with Piers Morgan that have been made public thus far, before it airs in its entirety on TV later this week, slammed Ten Hag. Ronaldo is currently training with the Portugal team in preparation for the start of the World Cup this coming weekend.
The five-time Ballon d'Or winner charged that the Dutchman treated him with "no respect."
Ten Hag has frequently stated in public that Ronaldo still has a role to play in his plans throughout his time as United's manager in the Premier League. However, the striker has struggled to find opportunities this season, making just four Premier League starts.
Ten Hag, whose decisions this season have frequently received support from the fans, has helped United develop a new identity and culture. United has arguably been better when Ronaldo has not played this season.
Similar to what he achieved at his old club Ajax, he has developed a collective vision and exhorted every member of his squad to sing from the same hymn sheet.
Van de Kraan said to Sky Sports, "Of course, it's the first time in his career that he's worked with a major, megastar. But I could immediately tell there was nothing he was doing differently from when he was at Ajax when I traveled to Manchester and observed the first few weeks of how he was working there. There were a few minor stars on the Ajax team, but the focus there was on the group as a whole rather than any individual players. He always ensured that everyone was treated fairly.
"Why did he adopt that tactic? And why did he adopt that mindset after joining Manchester United? He had no budget while at Ajax. He had a playing squad, and half of them were Premier League outcasts who had failed to advance, yet he came close to winning the Champions League. They played with great style, had great teamwork, and adhered to his ideology. Whether or not there was a player like Ronaldo at Manchester United, he wanted to operate that way. He felt that, given the status of his career, he had to accord him that respect, so he continued to try to treat him with as much respect as he could.
Ten Hag is one of the most ardent managers you may come across, yet frequently projects a cool and collected demeanor on the sidelines. He is eager to experience success at Old Trafford, and Van de Kraan, stressing the United manager's goals, thinks the entire Ronaldo controversy may be beneficial.
Ten Hag has never worried about his reputation because, to put it mildly, he comes from a well-off family, according to Van de Kraan. He didn't enter management to amass a million dollars.
"There was simply his passion for football, his desire to be a part of a team, and his ambition to succeed as a manager. For him, only that mattered. I believe he will emerge stronger."
