£17M ACE MUST CHOOSE TOTTENHAM OVER ARSENAL, WON’T WORK UNDER ARTETA
Given the current trajectory, it's difficult to see why any player would choose Tottenham Hotspur over Premier League leaders Arsenal at this point.
However, with Tutto Udinese reporting that both clubs are considering £12 million bids for Rodrigo Becao, the 26-year-old Brazilian appears to be more suited to life at one London giant than the other.
Becao has almost exclusively played on the right side of a back-three since joining Udinese from Bahia in 2019. The same formation that Antonio Conte has made his trademark over a decade in charge.Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has now experimented with his own defensive trio on occasion. However, the former Manchester City assistant appears to have settled on a more traditional back four these days, with Ben White playing wide on the right and Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba forming a more-than-effective central partnership.
Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are interested in Udinese's Rodrigo Becao.
In fact, Arteta has used a three-at-the-back system in only three of Arsenal's 21 games this season across all competitions. Tottenham, on the other hand, have used it in every single one of their 2022/23 matches, with Ben Davies frequently playing alongside Eric Dier and Cristian Romero, and Ryan Sessegnon and Emerson Royal (for the most part) operating wide on the touchline. As far as Tottenham are concerned, Becao appears to be a square peg in a square hole. The 6ft 3ins Becao, like Conte's all-action Argentine Romero, prefers to defend aggressively and on the front foot, winning the ball high up the pitch and relishing the relative freedom afforded to him by the presence of two other centre-backs covering his forays up the field.
During Romero's recent absence, Eric Dier has struggled in that right-sided center-back system. However, if Becao can emulate Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur in adjusting from Serie A to life in London, he could be a more reliable understudy for the outstanding but injured Romero.Becao's contract will expire in less than two years. According to the report, Udinese are unable to reach an agreement on an extension, which means that low-ball offers may be considered in January.
It remains to be seen, however, whether £12 million is sufficient. The Serie A surprise packages are asking for £17 million.
