Liverpool have new rival as Fábio Carvalho moment even more vital after Graham Potter admission

In the race for Champions League football, Liverpool now has a new rival. Graham Potter believes the Reds could still be thankful for Fábio Carvalho.

The World Cup appears to give Liverpool an advantage over their rivals, with the Reds sending only seven players to Qatar.

Manchester United is releasing twice as many players, while Chelsea and Tottenham are releasing 12 and 11 players, respectively.

But there is another team in the mix who is in a better position than the Reds: Newcastle United. The Magpies, who are currently third in the league, will only have five players competing in the tournament.

Newcastle signed off for the World Cup by defeating Chelsea 1-0 at St James' Park on Saturday evening, their second victory against a 'big six' side this season, following their earlier victory at Spurs. They've also drawn at Old Trafford and held Manchester City at bay.

In fact, Liverpool is the only team to have defeated Newcastle in 2022/23, and it took a 98th-minute winner from Fábio Carvalho in August.

With nearly 40% of the season gone and only two points separating them from the top two, are they truly in contention for Champions League qualification?

Their underdog status should definitely work in their favor. As a non-European side, they should only play one game per week, which Graham Potter cited as a decisive advantage following his team's defeat. This shorter fixture schedule should alleviate any concerns about their squad depth in comparison to the teams around them.
