The last match of PORTUGAL'S qualifying campaign couldn't have gone any better, and they did it WITHOUT Cristiano Ronaldo.

The first half double by Bruno Fernandes set the tone for the rest of the game.

And with to two late goals from Goncalo Ramos and Joao Mario, Nigeria's night just got worse.

To turn around the fortunes of his Nigerian team, Jose Peseiro faces a challenging assignment.

It has been a dismal year for Nigeria on the international scene, where they have been far too frequently guilty of falling short of expectations.

shock defeat by Tunisia in the AFCON semifinals, followed by even more heartbreak as Ghana ended their World Cup hopes.

To try and restart Nigerian football, Peseiro must now focus on the AFCON qualifiers.

Despite being one of the favorite teams, Portugal enters the World Cup as one of the underdogs.

They have the potential to skip the big event and all too frequently lose in the closing rounds.

They are capable of defeating anyone on their best day.

They are so unpredictable and hazardous because you never know which Portugal will show up.

But the team seems to have a bond; they are all fighting for the same goal and supporting one another all the way to the end.

Portugal will leave for the FIFA World Cup this weekend, and their opening match is against Ghana on Thursday at 4 p.m. (BST).

When they play Uruguay on Monday, November 28, they will face players like Luis Suarez and Darwin Nunez, which will be their toughest test yet.

Depending on how the game against Uruguay turns out, their final group match against South Korea might be more significant.

Portugal played well tonight as they thrashed Nigeria 4-0 in a mainly one-sided match.

The Super Eagles had a hard time stopping the hosts and were fortunate to trail by only two goals at the interval.

Despite excluding Santos' team for the first 20 minutes of the second half, they were unable to do so for the remainder of the match.

Portugal will enter the FIFA World Cup with optimism for the future.
