Rooney refers to Messi as "the GREATEST player of all time," he makes a well-timed jab at Ronaldo.
After his former Manchester United teammate reportedly referred to him as a "rat" this week, Wayne Rooney has used Lionel Messi as a well-timed dig at Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ronaldo attacked Rooney during his explosive, open-and-honest interview with Piers Morgan, claiming the former England player had thoughts of "jealousy" against him in response to the ex-England star's media criticism of the Red Devils earlier this season.
Rooney, who in a dig at Ronaldo on Friday called the Portuguese superstar's remarks "a bit weird," has referred to Messi as the greatest player to ever play the game.
The 37-year-old expressed his support for Messi in a recent interview with The Times, predicting that Argentina will win the World Cup in Qatar.
"For me, the favorites are Argentina," he declared. In contrast to 2018, they have a large number of capable, reliable players surrounding Lionel Messi, like Lautaro Martinez, Leandro Paredes, Rodrigo De Paul, and, of course, Angel Di Maria. They will have more confidence now that they won the Copa America last year, and some of the pressure is off of them. They'll be comfortable in the climate. Even without a No. 9, which serves as the attack's main point, I believe they will still be quite dangerous.
'Everyone has various views on Messi and Ronaldo, but I have said many times that I think Messi is the best,' Rooney responded when asked if winning the World Cup would make Messi the greatest player of all time.
I've watched a lot of videos of a similar player Diego Maradona, but Messi is superior. Ronaldo is more of a goal scorer, but he has everythingthe way he controls games, his dribbling, and his assists. If Messi or Ronaldo were to win the World Cup, it would make for a fantastic football narrative. Some of the Argentine players have reportedly stated that they want to win it for Messi. That's absurd and can put even more pressure on them.
During the conversation, Ronaldo was called a "rat" as Morgan questioned how Rooney could despise him more.
Which would you prefer: more money in the bank or more Instagram followers, the 57-year-old interviewer inquired.
That's a nice question, Ronaldo retorted. Likely similar!
I'm simply trying to figure out how Wayne Rooney could dislike you, even more, Morgan continued.
Not just him, but picture the other rats criticizing me as well. Nevertheless, Ronaldo retorted, "It's good to still be No. 1."
When asked if Rooney's criticism of him was motivated by jealousy, the former Real Madrid and Juventus great said, "Probably because he completed his career in his 30s." I won't say that I look better than him, which is true because I'm still playing at a high level.
Rooney responded to the interview by saying, "Listen, Cristiano Ronaldo is a tremendous player and, as I've said before, he and Messi are possibly the two best players to ever play the game."
