Mason Mount Liverpool transfer would make sense after Jurgen Klopp told FSG how much he'd cost

Liverpool fans were taken aback earlier this week when the Reds were linked with a move for Chelsea's Mason Mount.

After all, while the 23-year-old spent time on loan with Vitesse Arnhem and Derby County earlier in his career, it's difficult to see the Chelsea academy graduate leaving Stamford Bridge anytime soon.

Despite the fact that he is out of contract in the summer of 2024, the England international has yet to agree terms on a new contract with Chelsea, with talks now on hold until after the World Cup. While the club's owners do not want to lose him, he has been in talks with the Londoners about a new contract since the summer without a breakthrough. One of Stamford Bridge's lowest-paid senior players, he reportedly wants a new contract to reflect his status as one of Graham Potter's key players, but proposals so far have fallen short of his expectations, with it reported earlier this week that he has turned down one seven-year offer. As a result of Chelsea losing both Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen on free transfers last summer, clubs are understandably keeping an eye on Mount's situation.According to the Guardian, Mount is attracting interest from both Liverpool and Juventus. The Reds are rumored to be planning a midfield revamp at Anfield in 2023 to replace ageing stars, injury-prone players, and expiring contracts. Jude Bellingham of Borussia Dortmund is thought to be Jurgen Klopp's first choice target to strengthen his engine room, though he is also attracting interest from Manchester City and Real Madrid.

As a result, it's unclear whether Liverpool would be priced out of a move for the 19-year-old if he left the Bundesliga. As a result, could his England teammate be a viable replacement?

While Mount does not have the same profile as Bellingham, who is capable of playing as a midfielder,

He's still young at 23 and will only get better. Meanwhile, because he is English, he would fill a homegrown slot in Klopp's squad, which could become more pressing in the coming months with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, James Milner, Nat Phillips, and Caoimhin Kellher all facing uncertain long-term futures at Anfield and captain Jordan Henderson not getting any younger.
