Marriage is highly prioritized by the Bayankole tribe in Uganda and parents become excited upon seeing their children tying the knot to raise their own families.
In this African tribe in Uganda, when a child attains the age of eight or nine, the aunt takes it upon herself to prepare her adequately for family life.
The Bayankole tribe considers fat ladies charming hence, they are preferred over slim ones. Young girls at the age of eight or nine are expected to go through a fattening process to gain weight to make them attractive to men.
In this tribe, virginity is highly treasured. So young girls are frequently admonished to abstain from premarital sex which can lead to teenage pregnancy and attract shame upon their parents.
When a young girl breaks her virginity before marriage, there is a death penalty for her. She can also get banished from the community to serve as a deterrence to others.
Marriage in the Bayankole tribe comprises several events including a period when gifts are presented to the bride. This is known as "Kuhingira." During this period, relatives loved ones, and friends of the new bride donate gift items like cows and foodstuffs to her to be taken to her new place of abode.
In the bride's residence on the day of the wedding, there is a jamboree for the people who have attended the ceremony. There is enough food for the people to enjoy. A bull is also slaughtered by the father of the bride which will be eaten by the celebrants.
In the groom's residence too, there is also a jamboree to honour the occasion. There is a lot of fun for the people.
The finality of the ceremony comes with the bride's aunt subjecting the sexual powers and skills of the groom to practical tests.
The aunt engages in sexual affairs with the groom to see how powerful he is in bed. This also enables her to know whether the man is potent or impotent.
During this period, she observes all the sex skills exhibited by the man and also, she takes note of all his favourite sex positions. She later informs her niece of her experiences and guides her on how to deliver the sexual needs of her husband.
