The Premier League is currently on hiatus due to the winter World Cup in Qatar.

After 14 games, Arsenal leads the Premier League table by five points, five points ahead of Pep Guardiola's Manchester City.

And Alan Shearer has named two players, William Saliba and Granit Xhaka, to his Team of the Season, with Mikel Arteta as manager.

Shearer stated about Saliba: "He returned from a loan spell looking mature and experienced. Being away has made him feel more at ease and confident in what he's doing. He looks right at home in the Premier League."Regarding Xhaka, he added: "When many, including myself, thought Xhaka's time at Arsenal was up, he returned to form under Arteta. Showed excellent leadership qualities and is truly driving that team forward."

What Sporting CP have said about signing Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo has officially left Manchester United on mutual terms, and as expected, the forward has been linked with virtually every club imaginable since the news broke.

Chelsea, Bayern Munich, and every MLS club in the United States have all been linked with the now-free agent, but only one team is considered the favorite to sign him: Sporting CP.

Ronaldo rose through the youth ranks at the Lisbon club at the turn of the century, appearing in 31 first-team games and scoring five goals in 2002/03. His boyhood club is reportedly keen to re-sign him 20 years later.

Authentic Sports News reported at the end of August that the club was 'exploring ways' to make a deal to sign Ronaldo work, with the club considering offering Ronaldo a stake in the club, despite the fact that it is not prohibited by current regulations.

Here is what the club has said about the potential signing in recent months:

Back in October, head coach Ruben Amorim appeared to rule out a move for CR7, citing the club's inability to pay the player's wages as a major stumbling block for any deal.

"Everyone in Sporting hopes for Cristiano's return, but we don't have the money to pay his wages."

In an interview with RTP3 in Portugal, club president Federico Varandas praised Ronaldo as the "best Portuguese player ever," but refused to comment further on the club's potential signing of Ronaldo."I'm not going to make any noise right now. If Ruben Amorim objected to the return? Obviously not. It was never even brought up or discussed. There was no interaction with me, Hugo Viana, or Amorim. This topic did not exist. I'm sure it sells well in the press."

Hugo Viana, the club's sporting director, refused to rule out a future move for CR7 in July, stating:

"He has the ability to choose where he wants to go. But you never know what the future holds... So let's see what he decides."
