The United States kicked off its 2022 World Cup campaign against Wales on Monday, attracting nearly 12 million viewers across Fox and Telemundo.

This included an impressive average of 8.3 million viewers on Fox across broadcast and digital platforms, as well as 3.4 million viewers for the Spanish-language broadcast.

Given that the game was on a Monday morning, it bodes well for the USA's next game against England on Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, kicking off at 2pm ET and widely expected to be one of the most watched soccer games in U.S. TV history. The 1-1 tie between the United States and Wales aired at 2 p.m. ET/11 a.m. PT, following the Netherlands' 2-0 victory over Senegal. It had a peak audience of 9.4 million viewers from 3:45 to 4 p.m. ET. With an average audience of 563,000, the match was the most-streamed group stage match in Fox Sports history.

The game's presence on Fox's broadcast channel, as opposed to its cable channels, Fox Sports 1 and 2, certainly helped viewership. Matches are also being streamed live on the Fox Sports App.The match's Spanish-language coverage averaged about 3.4M viewers across Telemundo, Peacock, and Telemundo Deportes' digital platforms. A million of those viewers came from streaming.

Viewers in the United Kingdom benefited from a later start time of 7 p.m., and 11.5 million people tuned in to watch the game on BBC.

Earlier in the day, England's 6-2 win over Iran was watched by 1.6 million people in the United States across FS1 and digital platforms. That match started at 8 a.m. ET/5 a.m. PT, which explains, at least in part, why not many Americans tuned in. That match on BBC peaked at 8 million viewers in the United Kingdom around lunchtime..

With World Cup ratings, context is crucial.

For the last World Cup tournament in which the US men's team competed, ESPN had the English-language rights in the United States, while Univision had the Spanish-language rights. For example, the USA's 2-2 draw with Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal on a Sunday was watched by 24.7 million people, setting a record for a soccer game on US television at the time. This equated to 18.2 million viewers for the Disney-owned network and over 6 million viewers for Univision.

However, because Brazil is much closer to the United States than Qatar, the games were played later in the day.

Chelsea keen to sign 25-year-old Manchester United star playing in World Cup

The Blues were interested in the 25-year-old over the summer. However, nothing came of the interest. However, Jones has provided an update, stating that the west London club is still interested in the England international.

"His contract situation is interesting, and he has been unsettled since Cristiano Ronaldo's arrival." I'm told Chelsea is still monitoring the situation, even after Tuchel's departure."

Rashford's current contract is set to expire next summer. However, it is believed that Erik ten Hag regards the forward as an important player and that the club is planning to offer the 25-year-old a new contract. It's understandable that the club wants to keep him. The 25-year-old has been one of their best players this season and a regular under Ten Hag, appearing in 19 games for the Red Devils in all competitions and scoring eight goals.

He also scored against Iran in the Three Lions' first group-stage game at the FIFA World Cup. The 25-year-old came off the bench to score within 49 seconds as England cruised to a 6-2 victory.

Graham Potter could use a fast attacker like him. Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech's futures are uncertain, and the United forward would be an excellent replacement for either of them if they were to leave.
