Manchester United is ready to step up its pursuit of a Barcelona striker following Ronaldo's departure.
Manchester United recently made headlines by terminating Cristiano Ronaldo's contract. According to SPORT, the Portuguese international's departure could pave the way for the Premier League giants to sign Memphis Depay in January.
The club appears to be desperate for a couple of forwards and a midfielder, as requested by the coaching staff. According to the report, Depay has emerged as one of Manchester United's top targets in their quest to strengthen their offensive unit.
Erik ten Hag, the manager of Manchester United, is a big fan of Depay. He is familiar with the player and admires how he has matured as an attacker in recent years. As a result, the Barcelona forward is among the players sought by the Dutch tactician.
However, the Premier League giants are only interested in signing Depay if he is available on a free transfer in January.
This is where Barcelona comes into play. According to the report, the Catalans are willing to give Depay a letter of freedom in exchange for not having to pay his salary for the rest of the campaign.
Depay has appeared more interested in leaving Camp Nou during the winter transfer window, knowing that his role in the Barça team may diminish further as the season progresses.
However, it is reasonable to assume that Barcelona will play the waiting game before deciding whether or not to grant Depay a letter of freedom.
They are aware that the former Lyon starlet is participating in the ongoing World Cup, and that his performances could skyrocket his valuation.
As a result, it may be premature to draw any conclusions about Depay's future, especially given that the World Cup is currently underway.
The forward will not make a decision on his future until after the Qatar tournament. Depay could return to Old Trafford, as Manchester United are desperate for attacking reinforcements, especially now that Ronaldo has left.
