Wales goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey was shown a straight red card today in his team's 2-0 loss to Iran. The goalkeeper was given his marching orders after a reckless challenge on Iran's Medhi Taremi. With that red card, he became only the third goalkeeper in tournament history to be sent off.
Former Italian goalkeeper Gianluca Pagliuca was the first to receive a red card in the FIFA World Cup. Gianluca was sent off in the 21st minute of Italy's 1-0 victory over Norway at the 1994 World Cup. Despite the early red card, Dino Baggio's goal ensured the Italians' victory. At the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Itumeleng Khune was the second goalkeeper to receive his matching others. Khune was given his match orders in the 76th minute of the game, and Uruguay eventually won 3-0.
Wayne Hennessey's dismissal against Iran makes him the competition's third such victim.
