Upon scoring his first World Cup goal, Lewandowski sobs uncontrollably.
Robert Lewandowski broke down in tears on Saturday after scoring Poland's second goal in their 2-0 victory over Saudi Arabia, ending his tournament-long goal drought.
The pressure on Poland's talismanic striker increased after his shocking miss from the penalty spot against Mexico in midweek. He had gone five World Cup games without scoring.
Lewandowski, however, was given a superb opportunity to score against Saudi Arabia on Saturday, and all the pressure was eased when he had the easy task of putting the ball into the net to make it 2-0 for the day.
The Barcelona and former Bayern Munich striker was seen crying after sprinting toward the corner with his arms extended and remaining slouched on the field as teammates rushed to congratulate him. It all seemed to be too much for the veteran. He stood up, rubbed his face, and gave the crowd a kiss.
It was his first goal in a World Cup and the 77th of his career for Poland.
In the 40th minute, the 34-year-old not only maintained the ball in play following Mohammed Al-Owais' first block, but also laid it back for Piotr Zielinski to score.
Lewandowski's attempt to score a second goal late in the game was stopped by Al-Owais.
At the Education City Stadium, Poland struggled for extended stretches as the Saudi team was propelled forward by jubilant spectators in what appeared to be a home game.
At the conclusion of the first half, Poland's Wojciech Szczesny turned away a penalty shot from Salem Al-Dawsari. He then stopped Mohammed Al-Burayk's follow-up shot.
