1. Virgil Van Dijk (Netherlands)
Virgil Van Dijk is arguably the best defender in the world, and his inclusion in Holland's World Cup squad makes him the best defender at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Van Dijk and Liverpool were heavily chastised for their poor start to the English Premier League season, but the Kops have successfully turned things around. This would give Van Dijk the confidence he needs to push the Netherlands to a similar run in the competition as in 2010.
2. Marquinhos (Brazil)
3. Antonio Rudiger (Germany)
Ruben Dias (Portugal)
Thiago Silva (Brazil)
Thiago Silva is still proving himself at the age of 38. The Chelsea and Brazil defender has been a rock for his club and country.
The former PSG star was called up to the national team for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and he helped Brazil keep a clean sheet in their first game.
6. Raphael Varane (France)
Raphael Varane has been one of Manchester United's most important players this season. His injury near the end of the first half of the season cast doubt on his ability to make France's World Cup team.
The former Real Madrid star was eventually called up, and while he didn't start the first game against Australia, he started the second game against Denmark, which they won by two goals to one.
Lisandro Martinez
Lisandro Martinez has been a revelation for Manchester United since joining from Ajax. He has made the Red Devils more compact, and his ball-playing abilities have been a welcome addition.
Unsurprisingly, he was called up to Argentina's World Cup squad, but he was benched for the game against Saudi Arabia. Argentina was defeated by a score of two to one.
He started the second game and helped Argentina keep a clean sheet as they defeated Mexico 2-0.

Arsenal make Leroy Sane enquiry
Despite Arsenal reportedly on track to sign both Youri Tielemans and Mykhailo Mudryk, two main names on their shopping list who both appear to want to sign for Arsenal, it was somewhat surprising to read that they are also making inquiries about the former Manchester City man.
Then again, it could be his time at City that appeals to Arteta, who was still coaching there at the time.
Sane has 10 goals and six assists in 24 games for Bayern Munich this season, but he averages just over an hour per game for the Germans, who are four points clear at the top of the table.
In 135 games for City, the 26-year-old scored 39 goals and had 46 assists.
Sane was sold by City to Bayen Munich in 2020 for just under €50 million, and he is currently valued at €70 million.
He is under contract until 2025.
Arsenal were linked with a move for Sane in 2015, but he turned down moves to Liverpool and Tottenham before joining City in 2016 for €52 million.
