Enzo Fernandez has risen to prominence as a result of his performances for Argentina in the ongoing FIFA World Cup, including an incredible goal in the win over Mexico.
In addition to his World Cup performances, the youngster has excelled for his club SL Benfica. And, as a result of his success, he has become one of the most sought-after players in South America, with Barcelona among the clubs keen to sign him.
According to a new report from Fabrizio Romano, SL Benfica intend to scuttle Barça's plans to sign Fernandez.
The Portuguese giants, who signed the youngster during the summer transfer window, have no plans to sell him during the upcoming January transfer window. They only recently signed the player and do not want to let him go just yet.
Fernandez, a central midfielder by trade, was one of South America's brightest prospects when he moved from Benfica to River Plate. Since then, he has made 24 competitive appearances for the club, becoming an important figure in the club's second line of defense.
The 21-year-talent old's has been on display in his World Cup performances. They have not gone unnoticed, with a slew of European behemoths reportedly interested in his services. But Benfica aren't ready to let him go just yet.
According to Romano, Fernandez's contract with Benfica includes a €120 million release clause, which is a fortune for any club in Europe, including Barcelona.
Furthermore, River Plate owns a percentage of his sale, which means SL Benfica may be forced to raise Fernandez's price even further. It may effectively rule Barcelona out of the running, at least for the upcoming January transfer window.
The Argentine midfielder has been showing very high potential during the ongoing World Cup.
