The World Cup group stages are coming to an end, and the knockout rounds will begin shortly. This has been an intriguing tournament, with surprises like Japan topping their group while Belgium and Germany were eliminated at the first hurdle. Many Real Madrid players must be overjoyed with how things have turned out, while others must be devastated.
Eden Hazard is one player who had a forgettable tournament. He had barely played for Real Madrid this season leading up to the World Cup, but he kept the armband for his country and started. His performances in the first two games, however, left much to be desired, and Hazard was benched for Belgium's crucial final group game against Croatia. Not only that, but despite the fact that the Red Devils desperately needed a goal, he came on in the 87th minute. The game ended 0-0, and they were eliminated, bringing a sad end to their Golden Generation.
However, this could be the end of the Real Madrid star's international career as well. According to HLN, Hazard will continue to consider his future in the coming days, but there is a good chance that he will retire as a Red Devil after fourteen years. After a disastrous World Cup, Real Madrid's star could retire from international football.
Hazard did not have the World Cup experience he had hoped for. In many ways, this was his final opportunity to show that he was still a world-class player.
Instead, the tournament served as further proof that he is no longer the player he was in his prime. There's a reason Real Madrid broke their transfer record to sign Hazard from Chelsea after being linked with him for so long. However, his dream move to the Santiago Bernabeu has turned out to be a nightmare, as he has struggled with a series of injuries and now appears to be a shell of the player that he once was.
