Jose Gimenez, a Uruguayan defender, could face a 15-match ban after appearing to elbow a FIFA official.
The Atletico Madrid defender was enraged following his country's elimination from the World Cup in the group stage. Uruguay's 2-0 victory over Ghana was cancelled out by South Korea's 91st-minute winner against Portugal.
Gimenez, along with his teammates, were enraged. Edinson Cavani was not given a late penalty, which would have guaranteed their place in the Round of 16. Referee Daniel Siebert, on the other hand, was not.Referee Daniel Siebert, however, was not persuaded, and Diego Alonso's side were dumped out of the competition in humiliating fashion.
After learning of their departure, a enraged Gimenez allegedly elbowed a FIFA official who was attempting to confront Siebert. Uruguay's coaches and players did everything they could to prevent Gimenez from making his way to the FIFA officials in the tunnel.Unfortunately for the 27-year-old, FIFA has the power to punish him with a 15-match suspension. In addition to allegedly elbowing the official, he allegedly launched a rage-filled tirade at some nearby television cameras.
Do you think Jose Gimenez's suspension is reasonable? Tell us in the comments section below.
"These sons of b******, they [the referees] are all a bunch of thieves," Gimenez fumed into the camera. "Yes, son of a b****, record me."
He may not be the only one who finds themselves in the crosshairs of a FIFA reprimand. Cavani, an ex-Manchester United player, pushed over a VAR monitor as he stormed down the tunnel after a game.Uruguay's Luis Suarez, who is no stranger to FIFA disciplinary actions, also expressed his displeasure after the game. ""I see a penalty for Cavani because he is cut off by the defender and puts his body in front of him," Suarez said afterwards.
"Darwin's is also very clear." They are not justifications, but incredible penalties are being awarded in this World Cup. And then there's the referees' committee and FIFA, who should at least try to explain themselves better."
