We must build on World Cup positives — Salis Abdul Samed

Salis Abdul Samed, a talented midfielder for the Black Stars, is excited about the opportunity to represent Ghana at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. He believes that despite the team's early elimination, Ghana can take many positives from the campaign and build on them in the future.

The 22-year-old believes the young team has a bright future if the current squad is kept together to continue team-building because the competition has taught him and his teammates a lot about growing together.

Samed is certain that the current Black Stars have the talent to be successful, but he believes that the young team needs mental toughness as part of their development.

Inexperience

The RC Lens star, who was one of Coach Otto Addo's bright spots, told Daily Graphic in an exclusive interview that their lack of experience at major competitions and limited playing time together as a group worked against their collective goal of progressing beyond the group stage.

Nonetheless, Samed felt he had done enough in the four games he had played for Ghana in the previous four weeks to earn the trust of his coach and Ghanaians.Following an impressive performance for French Ligue 1 club RC Lens, Samed earned a spot in Ghana's final squad at the last minute, bringing qualities previously lacking in the team. However, walking into the national team and immediately commanding a starting role in the World Cup was a bit of a surprise for the player, and it may have come sooner than expected.

"I had no idea I'd even begin. I was working hard in my team in the hopes of being called up one day because it's everyone's dream to play for his national team. So I've been working hard to come here and demonstrate my abilities and what I can bring to the team," he explained.

Characteristics that are unique

Samed has been fantastic for Lens this season, playing 15 consecutive matches for the full 90 minutes, but he has yet to be tested for the national team. The fact that he made it into Coach Otto Addo's final 26-man squad before making his debut for Ghana speaks volumes about his talent.
