Three gunmen were slain by Nigerian police after they repelled an attack on an Electoral Commission office in the country's southeast.
On Monday, police reported that the assailants attempted to storm the main Inec office in Owerri, the capital of Imo State (November 12).
According to Michael Abattam, spokesman for the Imo State police, "the Inec headquarters in Owerri was assaulted by gunmen early this morning who damaged part of the building, furniture, and equipment."
Three of the assailants were killed and two were taken into custody after there was a shooting exchange, according to Abattam .

Several Inec offices have recently been attacked, particularly in the southeast where separatist groups are active.
An exchange of fire broke out, "three of the attackers were killed and two were arrested ," Abattam added.
It was the third similar occurrence in Imo State in two weeks, according to Inec spokesperson Festus Okoye, who confirmed the attack in a statement on Monday .
The Inec recently issued a warning that there would likely be an upsurge in violence during the election campaigns to be held and noted that at least 50 incidents had been reported since the exercise started over two months ago.
The Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) movement has been blamed for several assaults in southeast Nigeria, despite the fact that no organization has yet claimed credit for the most recent one.
Ipob, which wants the Igbo ethnic group to once again have a separate state, has categorically denied being behind the violence.
