The Croatian coach’s strategy to stop Messi in the last World Cup and the “head down” symptom

Throughout the last 15 years, every team that has been measured against Argentina has been involved in the same mission. Hard. It's nearly impossible. Few people made it. Stopping Lionel Messi, one of the greatest footballers in history, is the most difficult challenge for any team that has to face the PSG player.

During the five World Cups in which the man from Rosario donned the albiceleste jersey, there were few games in which his poor performance was remembered, but one stands out: on June 21, 2018, at the World Cup in Russia, at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium, Croatia defeated Argentina 3-0. That night was dark for Messi and magical for the Croatians, who finished second in the tournament.Messi will play his fourth game of the season against Croatia on Tuesday. The Argentine captain has two losses and one win. His first match was in Basel in 2006, and the Balkans won 3-2. That night, the Rosario native scored his first goal in an Argentina jersey. The Albiceleste won 2-1 in London in November 2014, and the most recent meeting was a 3-0 defeat of the Croats in the World Cup group stage in 2018. One of the five most significant victories in Balkan history. But there is a story behind what happened in that massive Croatian triumph, and Zlatko Dalic told it. The technical director of the Balkan team, who has been in charge since 2017, detailed the duel in his book "The Russia of our dreams." There, he revealed all of his reservations about the game. Also, how he let go of a key player. And, of course, how their players dealt with Lionel Messi.
