Real Madrid legend was interested in Manchester United move
Over the years, a number of legends have played for both Manchester United and Real Madrid. David Beckham, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Cristiano Ronaldo, Angel Di Maria, and Casemiro immediately come to mind. And with the two clubs being two of the biggest brand names in football, there will undoubtedly be more in the future.
When Luka Modric was at Tottenham Hotspur, it appears that he was interested in joining Manchester United and becoming the club's first Croatian player.
Thankfully, this did not occur, and Modric eventually found his way to Real Madrid, where he has gone on to have a stellar career.Instead of signing the Croatian midfield maestro, it appears that Manchester United signed Shinji Kagawa, who, while a good player in his prime, never reached the heights of Modric. According to Metro, Rio Ferdinand stated on his FIVE YouTube show:'I spoke to him before he went to Real Madrid because that's what I used to do; I was the player's agent, and I was Rio's agent before I retired.
'I used to think I could get into any player who was available or was on the rise.
'I spoke to Thiago Alcantara before he left Barcelona to join Bayern Munich, and that almost happened, but we signed [Marouane] Fellaini instead.
'But Modric, when I spoke to him, I asked him, "Are you leaving [Tottenham]?" and he said, "Yeah, I think I'm going to go," but he wasn't sure where he was going at the time.‘ "Listen, you have to come to United, man," I said, and he replied, "Yeah, listen, I want to be the first Croatian to play for Man United, I want to be that guy, can we make it happen?"
'However, it did not occur. I spoke with David Gill, and the manager at the time [Sir Alex] had already agreed with Shinji Kagawa. I believe it was - I'm certain it was - that year.'Or they already had irons in the fire with another player and they did that deal and then Modric went to Madrid and the rest is history.
'But I never imagined he'd do what he's done. What a performer!'
Before joining Real Madrid, Modric was interested in a move to Manchester United.
Modric has established himself as one of the all-time greats at Real Madrid, winning five Champions League titles with Los Blancos.
