No Olivier Giroud or Raphael Varane in France XI in last training session before World Cup final

Didier Deschamps, France's manager, made two surprising selections in his final training session before the World Cup final, with neither Raphael Varane nor Olivier Giroud selected in a training match.

The reigning champions face Argentina at the Lusail Stadium on Sunday afternoon and, despite a virus scare, have a full squad to choose from on the eve of the match.

Varane, Ibrahima Konate, and Kingsley Coman had all been isolated earlier in the week, while Aurelien Tchouameni and Theo Hernandez had been hampered by injuries.

However, all 24 players in Deschamps' squad are available to face Argentina, and according to French newspaper L'Equipe, he had the players practice in what appeared to be a starting XI on Saturday night. At the heart of the defense, however, Konate and Dayot Upamecano lined up alongside one another at centre-back.

It would be a huge surprise if Manchester United's experienced defender Varane did not start, and it is more likely that Konate and Upamecano were simply given some pitch time together as a precaution.

Varane is doing much better after contracting the same virus that kept Adrien Rabiot and Upamecano out of the semi-final victory over Morocco, and Deschamps is likely to rely on a player who has been a bedrock of his long, successful managerial tenure.Perhaps more intriguingly, Giroud was not among the players who trained in the final session, and there is no indication that the AC Milan striker is injured or ill.

In his place, Kylian Mbappe started in the middle and Marcus Thuram on the left wing, which is how France finished the match against Morocco and looked much better for it.

Thuram added pace, power, and directness to the attack, and his impact off the bench was lauded by Deschamps and his teammates.Hugo Lloris; Jules Kounde, Dayot Upamecano, Ibrahima Konate, Thero Hernandez; Antoine Griezmann, Aurelien Tchouameni, Adrien Rabiot; Ousmane Dembele, Kylian Mbappe, Marcus Thuram were the rest of Deschamps' starting XI.

Deschamps is said to be unsure how Argentina will line up and has prepared for three different scenarios.

Lionel Scaloni could go with a back three with Lisandro Martinez returning to the left side, a 4-3-3 with Angel Di Maria returning to the starting XI on the right wing, or the midfield-heavy formation that defeated Croatia with Leandro Paredes added to the midfield.
