WHY IS CRISTIAN ROMERO CALLED CUTI? TOTTENHAM STAR’S NICKNAME EXPLAINED AHEAD OF WORLD CUP FINAL
Cristian Romero of Tottenham Hotspur will play for Argentina against France in the World Cup final, but why is he known as 'Cuti'?
It all comes down to one more World Cup game in 2022.
Argentina will face France in the final on Sunday afternoon, with Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe vying for the title at the Lusail Stadium.
Those two players will take center stage, but some fans may be curious about Cristian Romero's nickname. Why is Cristian Romero referred to as Cuti?
Tottenham defender Romero is expected to start for Argentina against Mbappe, Olivier Giroud, and co.
Romero looked out of shape in the opener against Saudi Arabia, having spent weeks on the treatment table at Tottenham.
Romero was even dropped by Lionel Scaloni for the game against Mexico, but he has forced his way back into Argentina's lineup.Argentina will be looking for Romero to make a big defensive impact, but one question may arise about him.
Why is Romero referred to as 'Cuti'?
Romero still wears his surname on the back of his shirt, but the name 'Cuti' appears everywhere in reference to Romero.
His Instagram handle is 'cutiromero2?, as is his Twitter handle, and teammates frequently refer to him as 'Cuti' rather than Cristian. The explanation can be traced back to Romero's childhood in Argentina.
The Athletic's Charlie Eccleshare reported in 2021 that 'Cuti' was the name given to him by his sister Aldana.
Romero allegedly couldn't say Cristian as a child, so his sister simply said 'Cuti' instead.
Romero is now 24 years old and, we presume, capable of saying Cristian properly, but he has retained his nickname throughout his professional career.
The defender will be hoping to end the weekend as a World Cup winner, and he will undoubtedly have the support of his sister and the entire Tottenham fanbase.
