Amad scored from the penalty spot to give them the lead inside the first 20 minutes, giving him five goals in his last seven games.

The Manchester United loanee created space in the area and earned the penalty kick on his own after a deft one-two with Luke O'Nien. West Brom full-back Conor Townsend then tackled the player from behind.

Amad stepped up to comfortably stroke his shot into the bottom corner of the goal as Ross Stewart, Sunderland's regular penalty taker, was still working his way back from a serious injury.

Two minutes after the Black Cats broke the deadlock, Alex Pritchard was freed into the penalty area by Ellis Simms' flick, but Baggies goalkeeper Alex Palmer quickly retreated from his line to block the midfielder's shot.

At the Stadium of Light, goals from Tom Rogic and Daryl Dike in the second half gave West Brom a 2-1 victory over Sunderland.

Amad Diallo's penalty kick gave the Black Cats the advantage in the first half, but Baggies manager Carlos Corberan made numerous substitutions in the second half, including the introduction of both Rogic and Dike in an effort to turn the tide.

Rogic's close-range goal pulled West Brom even, and Dike's goal off a cross from Jed Wallace in the 83rd minute gave West Brom the victory.

At kickoff, Sunderland already had one post-World Cup victory under their belt after defeating Millwall nine days earlier, and the hosts got things going with assurance.

The visitors believed they should have been playing against 10 men just after the half-hour mark, even though West Brom had not yet produced an opportunity.

When Danny Batth allowed John Swift to gain control of the ball deep inside his own half, he responded by pushing the Baggies backward to stop him from making a dash for it.

Swift and his teammates asked for a straight red card, but referee James Linington chose to only give them a yellow. Following the break, the visitors kept up the pressure and nearly scored an equalizer eight minutes in.

Swift's low cross from the right side was met by Matty Phillips at the outside of the penalty area, but Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson stopped him.

Wallace crossed the ball, and it was cleared into Rogic's path. From the edge of the 18-yard box, the Australian poked the ball home on his first attempt.

With seven minutes remaining, another of West Brom's subs assisted on their second goal. Wallace sent in a cross from just inside the right touchline, and Dike strongly headed it in from close range.
