Ghana defender Alexander Djiku
has been shockingly banned by the French football authorities for engaging in
sports betting activities following an in-depth investigation, Ghanasoccernet.com can
reveal.
After investigations
into widespread betting by players and officials came to a conclusion, the
Professional Football League (LFP) in France handed the highly regarded
center-back a one-match suspension.
Djiku was one of 76
professional athletes, team administrators, and coaches that were implicated
after the inquiry. He was a member of the Black Stars team that recently
competed in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Despite a comprehensive training
program to make players and officials aware of the risks of participating in
match betting, the suspension applies to Djiku's betting actions throughout the
2020–2021 season.
Whether they are
participating in the game or not, betting on football games is forbidden everywhere
in the world for both players and officials.
Although the ban does
not imply that he placed bets on games involving the Ghanaian national team, it
hurts his clean character in the game because he was previously regarded as a
player who played with discipline.
The LFP stated in a press release
that "these offenses were committed despite though, jointly, the LFP and
the UNFP (the players' union) have carried out awareness or information
campaigns with the clubs on a regular basis."
The statement continued,
"The Commission recalls that there is a general prohibition on betting,
online or in physical networks, on all football competitions, whether domestic
or foreign, on the part of the actors of the competitions organized by the FFF
or the LFP (in particular the players, coaches, managers of professional
football clubs).
The Strasbourg center
back will be suspended for the crucial encounter against PSG and will miss the
start of the Ligue 1 games due to the major offense.
Djiku's chances of signing with a
new team will also be harmed by the punishment, as most clubs are reluctant to
recruit players with a history of partaking in gambling.
On Monday night, the
Professional Football League penalized the players, officials, and coaches for
breaking the law on sports betting during the 2020–2021 season.
Following the body's
probe for the 2020–2021 season, several Ligue 1 players were also named in the
report.
French professional footballers
were subject to a deluge of penalties. On Monday night, the LFP penalized 76
players, coaches, and managers. The latter did not abide by the Sport Code's
prohibition on sports betting throughout the 2020–2021 season.
