Mikel Arteta: Arsenal Will Be ‘Active’ In January Transfer Window After Gabriel Jesus Injury
Following the injury to striker Gabriel Jesus, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has stated that the club will be "active" during the January transfer window.
Jesus scored five goals and had six assists in the Premier League to help Arsenal lead the table heading into the World Cup in 2022.
However, the 25-year-old was injured while playing for Brazil in the tournament and has since undergone knee surgery.
"It'll take some time," Arteta predicted of Jesus.
"He's gone through surgery and that tells you the extent of the injury, so we will be in the market, always active and we will assess the biggest opportunities we have."We are going to be active and active means we are looking to strengthen the team.
"This squad still doesn't have the luxury of not maximising every single window. We must do so because it is critical, but first we must identify the appropriate profile.
"The right player is needed to take us to the next level."
Arsenal leads second-placed Manchester City by five points in the Premier League, and they return to action on December 26 against West Ham.Jesus, who joined Arsenal from Manchester City in the summer, was forced to withdraw from the World Cup after injuring himself during Brazil's 1-0 loss to Cameroon in their final group game.
"With Gabriel Jesus and his injury, it's obviously a huge blow," Arteta added.
"We will miss him for a while. The season has challenges, and this is one we must overcome, but if you want to be at the top, you must overcome those challenges.
"With Gabi it's difficult to put a timeframe because it was a significant injury. Knowing him, I'd rather not give him a date."
