John Barnes warns Liverpool over signing Morocco World Cup star
Liverpool legend John Barnes has issued a warning to his former club about a move for Morocco World Cup star Sofyan Amrabat.
The Reds are reportedly in talks to sign Amrabat, but his agent has revealed that the 26-year-old has a few offers on the table after massively impressing for Morocco in their run to the semi-finals in Qatar.
Amrabat put in several strong performances for his country, and after defeating Spain in the quarter-finals, he celebrated by posting a meme on social media depicting him strangling the Spanish midfield. The midfielder currently plays for Fiorentina in Italy, where he has made 78 appearances since joining in 2020.
Prior to joining Fiorentina, he was a member of Club Brugge, where he helped them win the Jupiler Pro League, and he spent the 2019-20 season on loan at Hellas Verona, where he was named Player of the Season.
Amrabat began his career in the Netherlands with Utrecht before moving to Feyenoord, where he won the KNVB Cup.However, he has recently been linked with a move to England, and Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is said to have met with the player's representatives.
'I thought he had a great World Cup, but what clubs shouldn't do is look at the World Cup and say they're going to sign players based on those performances,' Barnes told BonusCodeBets.'If they've been tracking him for the last six months to a year, that's fantastic.'
The Reds have struggled in the Premier League this season, finishing sixth in the table after winning only six of their first 14 games.
Liverpool were unable to sign a permanent midfielder last summer and had to settle for the loan signing of Arthur Melo.
Injuries and poor form have brought harsh criticism to Liverpool's midfield, and with Jordan Henderson, Thiago, and James Milner all over 30, the club is desperate to reduce their average age.
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes his old club will spend up to £200 million revamping their midfield next summer.
