HORROR MOVIES YOU MISSED IN 2022

The sadness

Not everyone will enjoy the splatterpunk mayhem of Rob Jabbaz's "The Sadness." In fact, it seems designed specifically to enrage and disgust individuals. And it is successful! I'm not going to pretend that this is some profound piece of high art, you understand. The mystery ailment that causes people to become mad homicidal maniacs, however, is depicted here in an intentional, distinctive manner. This movie is for fans of gore who grew up devouring the pages of horror magazines like Fangoria and Gorezone and who enjoy seeing actual make-up effects produce horrific wounds and geysers of flowing blood. In its own peculiar way, the movie is also darkly (very darkly) funny as it becomes more and more depraved and repulsive and as a significant number of bodies pile up.

Halloween ends

The last installment of David Gordon Green's "Halloween" reboot trilogy might have had Michael Myers hunting victims around Haddonfield. Indeed, it appears that was exactly what the public desired. The problem is that there are already many movies with that specific plot. It wouldn't hurt to give something...different a shot, right? And Green creates a movie where evil is contagious and spreads like a disease in "Halloween Ends." Although Michael Myers is still alive, the movie concentrates on Corey (Rohan Campbell), a lonely and rejected man who essentially becomes the Shape's apprentice. After all these years, Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) is still looking for closure. Green also delivers it to her while  leaning into the idea that the people of Haddonfield are just as bad as the monster they hate, willing to give in to mob justice because they think they're morally right. All of this swirls about to create a shockingly complex entry in the franchise, and the most interesting "Halloween" sequel since "Halloween III: Season of the Witch." More established horror franchises should be willing to take big swings like this.
