Liverpool has been connected with a wide range of players, so the January transfer window might be active for additions. However, a lot of first team players from the present could be leaving.
This season, a number of Reds stars have battled injuries, with Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain among those who have missed significant amounts of time.
Along with other Liverpool players, the contracts of those two players expire. The Reds may sell those players in January if they choose not to renew all or any of the expiring contracts.Jude Bellingham and Enzo Fernandez, a midfield duo, have been heavily linked with moves to Jurgen Klopp's team. The club is also reportedly interested in centre-back Josko Gvardiol, attacking midfielder Mason Mount, and forward Youssoufa Moukoko.
If any of those players are added, Klopp may need to consider rearranging his roster by letting some of his present players go, while other players may decide to go in quest of greater playing time.
Five players who might depart Anfield in January are listed below.
Keita Naby
Naby Keita has had a particularly difficult season as he hasn't participated in a senior competitive game since the season-opening Community Shield match against Manchester City due to injury.
When healthy, the Guinea midfielder is without a doubt a talented player, but his deal with Liverpool expires in the summer, and he has been linked to other teams.
Oxlade-Chamberlain, Alex
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, a player whose deal also ends in the summer of 2019, recently made a full recovery from a major injury he sustained in the preseason.
However, since the start of the 2020–21 campaign, he has only made 32 Premier League appearances, and Liverpool may decide that it is time to let the 29-year-old go at this point.
Brandon Clark
The first team has been training with 18-year-old Bobby Clark this season after he made an impression while playing at the minor level. In August's 9-0 Premier League victory over Bournemouth, he earned his senior debut.
Clark played in this month's Dubai Super Cup and could be loaned away in January. The midfielder has been linked with a move to Championship team Preston North End, who have previously had success developing Reds defender Sepp van den Berg.
Kelleher, Caiomhin
Caiomhin Kelleher has excelled for Liverpool in cup competitions and was the hero in the penalty shootout victory over Chelsea in the final last season. He may be a wildcard selection. His chances of unseating Alisson as the club's top player anytime soon, though, appear to be slim.
At age 24, it's possible that the Republic of Ireland international decides it's time to look elsewhere for a regular starting position. Although it now seems as though he will remain in Merseyside, anything is still possible.
Phillips, Nathaniel
For stepping in and guiding his team to Champions League qualification during the injury-riddled 2020–21 season, Nat Phillips will go down in Liverpool mythology.
In that season, he played in 17 league games as a replacement for the injured center back three of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, and Joel Matip.
The 25-year-old has remained a capable deputy even though it was unlikely that he would keep his position once those players returned. However, the defender, who spent a portion of the 2017–18 campaign on loan at Championship team Bournemouth, may wish to transfer on a permanent basis in January.
