At the end of a trying week, St Mirren added insult to injury by defeating 10-man Aberdeen 3-1 at home despite missing two of their three penalty attempts.

Matty Kennedy gave Jim Goodwin's Dons an early lead before captain Anthony Stewart was sent off in the 35th minute. The Dons had already lost to Celtic and Rangers this week.

As a result, Saints were given the first of their three penalties. Mark O'Hara's attempt hit the post but rebounded into the net off the back of goalkeeper Kelle Roos. O'Hara gave the home team the lead with a penalty-kick goal in the 53rd minute, but Jonah Ayunga missed a third-penalty chance to make it 2-0.

As Saints reacted, Greg Kiltie was able to flick the ball into an empty net from 30 yards out after Aberdeen sent Roos up for a last-minute corner.

Keanu Baccus, who just represented Australia at the World Cup, was a member of Saint's starting lineup for their first game in six weeks. He replaced Jayden Richardson in the Dons' one alteration from the squad that suffered a midweek loss to the Rangers.

Kennedy nearly scored when his fierce shot hit the near post, but he would not be stopped. In the ninth minute, he scored with a stunning long-range shot that found the upper right corner of the goal.

Saints made an effort to equalize, and Baccus played Curtis Main in. Main's shot was blocked, and Baccus' effort from the rebound was deflected for a corner. The next threat came from former St. Mirren defender Hayden Coulson, but Trevor Carson easily caught his curling attempt.

Ayunga created an opening at the opposite end by taking advantage of some lax Dons defending, but he subsequently blasted his shot high over the crossbar.

However, the guests failed to heed their lesson, and Stewart was expelled for bringing down Ayunga on the area's edge. VAR examined it and determined that it was a penalty and a red card. O'Hara's kick struck the post but rebounded off Roos and into the goal.

The home team received a second penalty to begin the second half. As O'Hara kicked the ball into the area, Roos and Ross McCrorie both paused, allowing Main to nick in.

As the striker passed the goalkeeper, he was caught, and referee Nick Walsh once more pointed to the spot. O'Hara's shot followed the same path, but this time it went into the bottom corner to give Saints the lead.

Surprisingly, a third penalty was unexpectedly given to the home team shortly after. Ayunga chose to take the penalty kick himself after McCrorie took him down. However, because of his feeble effort, Roos was able to make the save.

Aberdeen was given a chance to recover after that, and they nearly tied the score when Ylber Ramadani's drive hit the underside of the crossbar and Coulson somehow headed wide from a corner. Saints were barely holding on until Kiltie's injury-time goal sealed the victory.
