Transfer News: Blow for Chelsea in their pursuit of 23-year-old La Liga striker

Chelsea suffers a transfer blow with the offer of Joao Felix to a rival.

Chelsea suffers a transfer blow with the offer of Joao Felix to a rival.

Chelsea have suffered a setback in their pursuit of Atletico Madrid forward Joao Felix, according to journalist Simon Phillips (via @FabrizioRomano via @caughtoffside) [h/t Football. London].

According to reports, Manchester United and Arsenal have held talks with the Portuguese sensation's agent about a possible loan move, putting the Blues further behind.Felix is represented by superagent Jorge Mendes, who is doing everything he can to ensure that the Atletico Madrid forward ends up in the right place after his next move.

The 23-year-time old's in Madrid has not gone as planned. Felix struggled to adapt to the Spanish club's playstyle and eventually fell out of favor with the manager.

Diego Simeone has left Felix on the bench several times this season. He does not appear to trust him to play a leading role, and their relationship is becoming increasingly strained.

The former Benfica wonderkid, however, is far too talented to be warming the benches of Atletico Madrid, and he requires a new club.Felix is no longer a gifted young player with tremendous potential. At 23, he is of the age when he must deliver on the promise that he has shown for far too long, and he must ensure that the club he joins suits his playing style.

Chelsea's failure to initiate talks with Felix may indicate that they do not value him at this time. This is understandable given that we have a player with a similar profile in Kai Havertz on our team.

What we really need is a young, proper number nine who can serve as a reference point and solve our long-term striker crisis. As a result, missing out on Felix may not be such a bad thing.
