The Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL) has urged organised labour to create a proactive labour front in 2023 to vigorously and successfully defend the rights of the nation's workers.
The GFL Secretary General, Mr. Abraham Koomson, stated that the labour unrest or discontent this year was a sign of irritation, a sense of dishonesty, and other activities by policymakers and the government that were detrimental to the progress of employees.
He asserted that the labour front must come together and challenge anybody who is not acting in the best interests of the workforce, including the government and established management.
He emphasised that labour unions must stand up and fight for their just portion of the national pie.
Speaking at the Ghana News Agency Platform, Mr. Koomson questioned why some employees retired with their full salaries and all other benefits while others received essentially nothing.
We must all work together to rectify these mistakes and unjust labour practises the next year, he urged.
"We all work for the same state; the animal farm regulations must change, or we all go home without our full pay and other perks." Despite the create, loot, and share has persisted throughout the years, the GFL Secretary-General voiced worry that labour leaders have continued to battle and progress in separate ways while appearing pursuing the same purpose, saying that "organised labour must unify now or we will all soon perish."
According to him, successive administrations had taken advantage of the divide on the labour front and infiltrated the labour leadership to further their political objectives.
In 2023, Mr. Koomson urged practical solutions to the fragmented labour front, arguing that no labour organisation should put its political objectives above the needs of its members.
"Some individuals come to the union for something different, they come to make money without proper consideration of the people who have given them the mandate," he said of those who hold positions only for their own personal gain.
The regional manager of Ghana News Agency in Tema, Mr. Francis Ameyibor, urged organised labour to strengthen its ties with the media in 2023 because "in the current world, the media has become a more potent instrument for labour activism."
According to Mr. Ameyibor, labour unions need the media's help to successfully accomplish their goals. "Journalists must not be relegated to the background and only used on occasion when necessary. "Media must be at the heart of organised labour," he added. "Media is a strategic partner for the development and expansion of forces of labour.
