Following the death of Brazilian football legend Edson Arantes Do Nascimento who is popularly known as Pele, Neymar had this to say: "Before Pele, 10 was just a number". That is exactly how the number 10 became famous in football. Because of Pele's role in popularizing the number 10, many talented players now wear it.
The fact that Pele got the number 10 in the first place demonstrated how insignificant the number was before him. According to the man himself, the Brazilian football authorities submitted their squad for the 1958 World Cup without allocating numbers. Pele, then 17, was given the number 10 at random by FIFA.
By the end of the 1958 World Cup, he had become the tournament's leading goal scorer and had won the tournament as the best player. From then on, he wore the number 10 shirt everywhere he played, and the once insignificant number grew in popularity alongside him.
Because of the influence of the man who won three World Cups, Ronaldinho, Neymar, Rivaldo, and many other top Brazilian players chose to wear that number.
The number became associated with excellence in the football world in general, with players such as Lionel Messi, Diego Maradona, Michel Platini, Zinedine Zidane, and Ferenc Puskas all wearing it.
Pele is no longer with us, but his legacy lives on, and the number 10 will always be associated with excellence as a result of his contributions.

Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic keen on Manchester United transfer
According to the Manchester Evening News, Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic is 'keen' on a move to Manchester United, according to a report from Calciomercato.
After terminating Cristiano Ronaldo's contract last month, the Red Devils are desperate to strengthen their attacking department. The recruitment team is thought to be focusing on the summer transfer window while also looking to bring in a striker on loan in January for the remainder of the season.
Vlahovic is intriguing because he was once one of Europe's most wanted men. He only joined Juventus from Fiorentina in January and is already being linked with a move away, despite costing the Serie A giants over £66 million.Vlahovic, as a more traditional center-forward, is arguably a better fit for the current United squad than Cody Gakpo, who has already left PSV Eindhoven for Liverpool.
Since his arrival, the 22-year-old has scored 13 goals in 25 Serie A appearances for Juventus, but their early exit from the Champions League has left them in need of funds.
Meanwhile, according to Corriere dello Sport, Vlahovic's agent Darko Ristic is looking for a move away from Turin. Both PSG and Bayern Munich are said to be interested in the striker.
It's easy to see why a player like Vlahovic would want to join United right now. We are on the right track under Ten Hag, and we have a goalscorer who will undoubtedly enjoy playing with our other attacking players.
