Carlo Ancelotti has named four players in football history who are better than Lionel Messi. During a press conference on Thursday, Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho argued that there have been great footballers who have played the game better than Lionel Messi.

He mentioned Diego Maradona, Alfredo Di Stefano, and Johann Cruyff as players who played the game better.

"Is Messi the greatest in history?" he wondered. He's a fantastic player, but I can't decide who is the best.

Messi is widely regarded as the greatest of all time (GOAT) after leading Argentina to victory in the 2022 World Cup.

"There have been so many wonderful players... Maradona, Di Stéfano, Cruyff... I'm not sure."

NEWCASTLE UNITED: CLUB LEFT DISAPPOINTED NOT TO SIGN ANDREY SANTOS

Newcastle United have been left disappointed after failing to sign Andrey Santos, according to Dean Jones.

Newcastle were pipped to the signing of Santos by Chelsea, according to Jones, with the 18-year-old set to undergo a medical at Stamford Bridge ahead of a £10m January move.

The Magpies were ready to make a move for the Vasco da Gama teenager, but have now lost out to the West London club, according to The Northern Echo.

Santos can play anywhere in the middle of the field and has a good eye for goal, having scored 11 goals in 42 games for the Brazilian team in 2022.Newcastle have been left licking their wounds, according to Jones, after the Daily Mail previously reported that they were favourites to sign him.

"Other ones in terms of Newcastle is attacking midfielder, we know it's something that they like, they really liked Santos, who's ended up going to Chelsea.

"They're actually disappointed that they didn't get any further in the conversation on that one.

"I think they're a bit frustrated, but they're going to try and move on from it quickly. These things happen, especially when you're competing with the Premier League's true elite," Jones explained. The attempted signing, at the very least, demonstrates Newcastle's massive turnaround from relegation-threatened club to a club that shops at the same level as the European elite in just 12 months, with Barcelona and Manchester City also interested.

It clearly demonstrates Eddie Howe's intention to sign a central midfielder, with James Maddison long admired by the club, but his £60 million price tag may have put them off due to Financial Fair Play concerns.

Instead, the Magpies may look to bring in young talent in the mold of Santos in order to lay the groundwork for a team that can consistently challenge for the Premier League title in the coming years.
