Man Utd legend left red-faced over "depressed ambition" claim about Arsenal
Gary Neville's predictions on Arsenal's potential under Mikel Arteta have resurfaced following the Gunners' outstanding start to the 2022/23 season.
Arsenal leads the Premier League table by seven points over second-placed Manchester City.
Arteta's team has only lost once in the league this season, a 3-1 loss to Manchester United in which they dominated play for long stretches.
They also have the league's second best defense, with only Newcastle (11) conceding fewer goals than the Gunners have this season. This has been largely due to the ever-present defensive quartet of Aaron Ramsdale, William Saliba, Gabriel, and Ben White, as well as Kierney and Oleksandr Zinchenko at left-back.
Summer signing Gabriel Jesus has had a huge impact, while Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, and Martin Odegaard have been providers and goal scorers. Meanwhile, Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka have been useful in midfield.
However, speaking prior to the end of the previous season, in which Arsenal finished fifth, United legend Neville expressed doubts about how far Arsenal could go in future seasons.
Neville weighs in on Arsenal.
Neville stated on The Overlap in March 2022, "I really like Mikel Arteta. He's a fantastic coach in my opinion. In terms of young players, I think the team is fantastic.
"But it's interesting when you're in a cycle of a club and you depress the ambition and have a significant period ofwhat would be failure, because you then get really happy about finishing fourth. I found myself saying that about Manchester United, but it was because of a lack of ambition.
"My concern is that if Arsenal finish top four [last season] - which, to be fair, is 50/50, I still think there's a long way to go in that race - but if they finish fourth, that's in some ways as good as it gets.""You've got Pep [Guardiola], [Jurgen] Klopp, Manchester United, and Chelsea. Where can Arsenal go?
"They are not going to compete. Mikel Arteta is an excellent coach. I like how we're seeing a team that he's getting the most out of. I can see how he wants to play. We all can.
"But he gets to fourth, and if he was really tough about it, he'd probably say, 'Right, that's the best I can do there, I'm going now and getting my next job.'"
Arsenal did not finish in the top four last season, thanks to a mixed run of results at the end of the season.
But they've channeled their disappointment into this campaign, defying Neville's prediction and sitting at the top of the table.
