Barcelona plot shock move for Liverpool star that Xavi 'really likes'

Barcelona is reportedly interested in signing Liverpool striker Roberto Firmino.

The Brazilian's contract expires at the end of the season, and he could leave Liverpool on a free transfer in the summer.

Earlier this season, Liverpool discussed a possible contract extension with the 31-year-old.

However, it is unknown whether he will be offered a new contract following the signing of Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven.

According to Spanish media, Barcelona is considering a move for Firmino.

According to El Chiringuito journalist Jose Alvarez, Barcelona manager Xavi "really likes" the Brazil international and may be willing to offer him a contract.

Barcelona are reportedly interested in signing Firmino to replace Memphis Depay, who is expected to leave the Nou Camp in January or when his contract expires in the summer.

Firmino can now negotiate a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs as he enters the final six months of his contract at Anfield.

Will Firmino depart from Liverpool?

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp insists that the signing of Gakpo has no bearing on whether Firmino is offered a new contract.

Klopp has indicated that the striker, who has nine goals in all competitions this season, could stay with the club for the remainder of the season and possibly beyond.

When asked if Gakpo's arrival would affect Firmino's decision to stay, Klopp replied, "No. We spoke with Bobby. From my perspective, I strongly desire that he remain.

"It has no effect. If it affects Bobby, you should ask him."

Firmino, who joined Liverpool from Hoffenheim in 2015, is one of the club's longest-serving players.

He has 107 goals in 348 games for the Reds and has been a key member of the team throughout Klopp's tenure as manager.During his time at Liverpool, the Brazilian has won every major club award available, including the Champions League and Premier League.

He also has 55 caps for Brazil but did not make the squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
