Rock-bottom Hull's victory at the DW Stadium allowed them to climb up to 16th position in the Championship, handing Wigan a third 4-1 loss in as many days.
Only a superb block by Joe Bennett prevented Alfie Jones from shooting behind for a corner after the visitors made a strong start. Sean McLoughlin blasted the ball just wide of the far post from the ensuing set-piece.
McLoughlin nodded on another corner from Jean Michael Seri before Oscar Estupinan's shot almost missed the right post. Hull took the lead in the 15th minute, so the rest was only momentary.
Curtis Tilt appeared to trip Allahyar Sayyadmanesh as he attempted to deliver another corner. However, referee Geoff Eltringham permitted play to continue, and captain Jacob Greaves scored with his left foot.
The next portion of the half was essentially an exhibition, with Hull playing keep ball and Wigan finding it difficult to establish any kind of possession.
At halftime, Wigan replaced Callum Lang with Nathan Broadhead, an Everton striker on loan, and the pace picked up significantly after that. In fact, Broadhead scored the equalizer on minute 63 thanks to a fantastic inswinging corner from James McClean.
At this moment, Wigan had the game to themselves as they experienced by far their best stretch of the match. Before Tilt headed Max Power's cross barely over the top, the Hull defense had to stand firm to stop many excellent McClean deliveries.
Wigan needed Jamie Jones to handle Cyrus Christie's whirling right-wing cross with absolute finesse at the opposite end. Thelo Aasgaard, a junior international for Norway, and Josh Magennis, an ex-Hull player, came on as substitutes to give Wigan new life.
With 12 minutes left, Hull took the lead again, although Wigan appeared to be the team with the best chance of winning.
From Wigan's perspective, it was a terrible goal to lose after Tilt unintentionally set up Estupinan for a strike that deflected off Jack Whatmough. With five minutes left, replacement Tyler Smith got the ball around Jones and scored from a tight angle to secure the points.
Smith scored his second goal with practically the last kick from the entire yard as the home crowd began to leave their seats.
