The Ashanti Regional Director of the National Service Scheme (NSS), Alex Opoku-Mensah, was punished, according to David Tenkoreng-Twum, General Secretary of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA).
Due to his verbal abuse of a nurse at the Manhyia Government Hospital, Mr. Opoku-Mensah has been placed on two months of unpaid leave.
Mr. David Tenkoreng-Twum claims that even though the GRNMA requested his complete dismissal, they are now rethinking their position because of his sincere repentance.
"I must tell that, despite the fact that we had asked for a complete dismissal of same, we are extremely happy. We are not requesting that he return home and rot away, after all, he said.
This statement was given by Mr. David Tenkoreng-Twum during an interview on JoyNews'.
His remarks were in answer to the host's query regarding whether GRNMA was prepared to provide a second opportunity to the head of the Ashanti NSS.
Naturally, why not? He said to Blessed Sogah of JoyNews, "We think that we are all human beings, we err at one time, and we have seen the suggestions that have been given forth by the committee formed to look into the subject.
It should be noted that Alex Opoku-Mensah, the head of the Ashanti Regional NSS, is said to have verbally harassed a nurse at the Manhyia Government Hospital following a disagreement with his daughter (a house officer).
The house officer's prescription wasn't available at the pharmacy, so the nurse called to offer a different medication.
The house officer is claimed to have taken offence at the nurse's manner of speaking with her and complained, according to the Medical Superintendent, Dr. Hussein.
When she spoke with the nurse on the phone, the house officer just so happened to be with her father, according to Dr. Hussein. Infuriated by the course of events, Mr. Opoku-Mensah accompanied his daughter to the hospital.
You are quite frustrated, Mr. Opoku-Mensah is heard saying in a viral audio clip. Who was the dog's breeder? … You don't respect her; you envy her. Are you a physician? So who are you? Are you insane? Do you own the hospital? Stupid moron, you are a useless nurse, and you are a useless lady. Do you recognise me? I work for the National Service Scheme as the regional director. Some of you are my subordinates.
Although the NSS head apologised for his comments, the National Service Scheme Management suspended him for verbally assaulting the nurse in a statement released on Thursday.
The troubled Ashanti Regional chief has been told to apologise to the NSS for his actions, which have brought dishonour to the organisation.
