According to Agyeman Badu Akosa, the former director-general of the Ghana Health Service, there is a lack of supervision in all professions in Ghana, which prevents practitioners from being aware of the boundaries of their activity.
He claims that establishing a regulatory agency to monitor the actions of different professions, particularly medical practitioners, will prohibit them from doing anything they want.
His remarks come after Mr. Alex Opoku-Mensah, the Ashanti Regional Director of the National Service Scheme, was suspended.
Due to his involvement in an incident at the Manhyia Hospital between a nurse and a medical professional (his daughter), in which he verbally abused the nurse, Mr. Opoku-Mensah was placed on leave.
Professor Akosa stated, "It is crucial that everyone accepts and recognises the restriction in terms of their professional activity," during an interview with JoyNews on Wednesday. The absence of monitoring in this nation is one of the challenges, in my opinion. All professional groups in our nation lack supervision, which has given people the freedom to try to accomplish anything they want and, in essence, to go beyond what their competence and capability let them.
The former head of the Ghana Health Service went on to say that Ghana's healthcare providers needed to learn from international best practises.
"There is no problem; I have worked in the UK previously. Each professional group is skilled at what they do, and as a result, the patient improves. Ghana hasn't yet reached that point, he continued.
Additionally, Mr. Badu Akosa advised all medical professionals to consider their education, readiness, and capacity to collaborate for the benefit of patients and the entire nation.
For verbally insulting the nurse, Mr. Alex Opoku-Mensah has been placed on a two-month leave of absence without pay.
Following an emergency meeting in response to the occurrence in November 2022, the National Service Scheme (NSS) on December 1, 2022, provisionally suspended him to allow for inquiries.
Opoku-Mensah has reportedly been suspended for two months without pay, according to a new NSS instruction. The suspension is effective right away.
This came when a committee finished its task and gave management of the NSS its report.
