Son explains why he keeps throwing away protective face mask as Tottenham star takes injury ‘risk’
Heung-min Son has explained why he keeps tossing away a "annoying" protective face mask, with the Tottenham Hotspur star willing to "risk" injury.
Korean sustained an eye socket fracture.
Mask worn at the 2022 World Cup is still in place on Premier League duty.
WHAT HAPPENED? The South Korean international suffered a fractured eye socket prior to the 2022 World Cup finals in Qatar and has been wearing a facial accessory ever since. Son admits that he is growing tired of the mask, with the Spurs forward throwing it off his head during a recent game against Aston Villa before flinging it off again when scoring a much-needed Premier League goal against Crystal Palace.WHAT THEY SAID: Son has told Standard Sport of his desire to see the back of the uncomfortable mask, which may go against the wishes of certain family members and club doctors: "Obviously, it's not the same as when I play without the mask. My vision is still fine, but when the ball comes at me, it can be annoying because I can't see it because of the mask. It doesn't bother me too much, but it's not ideal. I was really frustrated against Villa because I received the ball and then lost it because I couldn't see it. I was simply enraged."If I'm alone, obviously, I would play without the mask, but my parents, my family, my friends watching back in South Korea are all worried. If someone hits me again, it's obviously a risk. They [my parents] never told me to wear it or anything, but we were having dinner [after the Villa game] and they asked, 'Um, what happened with the mask?' They're obviously concerned. Also, after the Villa game, the physios and doctors said, 'It's your decision, but we recommend you continue to wear the mask,' because the risk is still high because it's only been seven weeks since the operation."
