Despite being capped for the 2018 World Cup champions, Lyon star Houssem Aouar has switched his national allegiance away from France.

Real Betis, Roma, and Nottingham Forest have all expressed interest in the midfielder, who is out of contract at the end of the season.

Aouar played for France's Under-17 and Under-21 teams before being called up to the national team for his first senior cap by Didier Deschamps. The 24-year-old made his France debut in his team's 7-1 thrashing of Ukraine at the Stade de France, picking up two assists in his first and only appearance.

Aouar had previously been called up to France's Nations League squad, but he was an unused substitute against Croatia and left out of the squad against Portugal.

The Algerian-born Frenchman was left out of Deschamps' France squads for Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

According to reports, Aouar will end his brief stint with France and switch his national allegiance to Algeria.According to DZfoot, Algerian Football Federation (AFF) president Djahid Zefizef has confirmed that Aouar will now represent Algeria.

Aouar had previously kept his international future under wraps, despite speculation that he could represent Algeria.

The ex-France international refused to discuss a possible switch to the Algeria national team ahead of Lyon's 1-0 loss to Marseille in November 2022."I only want to talk about Marseille," Aouar said at the time, according to L'Equipe.

According to FIFA rules, a player can switch nationalities as long as they have not played in a competitive match for a country.

In addition, any change in a player's national allegiance must be approved by the World Cup organizers.

Aouar was previously invited by the Algerian FA to play for Algeria in a friendly match against Nigeria in September of last year.

Algeria has called up Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar, according to reporter Dean Ammi at the time.

"It is now up to the player whether he wants to join the squad or not."
