Josko Gvardiol gives update on Chelsea transfer interest
RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol has revealed that he expects Chelsea to make a bid for him before the end of the January transfer window, but he is not looking to leave before the summer.
Chelsea failed with a £77 million bid during the summer, prompting Gvardiol to extend his contract with Leipzig by a year until 2027. However, he mentioned'seeing what happens in winter' as early as September.
Since then, the young defender, who will turn 21 later this month, has continued to impress for Leipzig while also helping Croatia finish third in the World Cup.
But now that January has arrived, the subject of his next move has resurfaced.
Chelsea, on the other hand, were further down the road in terms of negotiations than anyone else, and Gvardiol understands how eager the Blues are, despite the difficulties in striking a deal, which pushed them towards a €38m move for Benoit Badiashile instead.
Chelsea hopes that their willingness to close a deal now will put them ahead of competitors who may be looking to the summer, though a move to Stamford Bridge is more likely in the summer - potentially on terms similar to the club's pre-arranged Christopher Nkunku deal.Gvardiol said he was discussing the saga with Croatian outlet Danas. "[Chelsea] did not give up, but we agreed to go for the winter. Winter has arrived, so we must decide what and how to proceed; however, there is still time; we shall see.
"Which is better, Manchester City or Chelsea? I'm not sure. Nobody offered me anything. As far as I'm concerned, I have no idea. But I'm not in a rush; we have time; let them work out the details and we'll see."
