Xavi makes statement after Barcelona overtake Real Madrid
Barcelona won a tough away game against Atletico Madrid to go three points clear at the top of La Liga, while Real Madrid lost to Villarreal this weekend. This is also the largest lead that Xavi's team has had this season, and it is something that no one could have predicted when they lost the first El Clasico of the season convincingly and Los Blancos looked unstoppable.
That's how quickly things can change in football, and they have for Carlo Ancelotti's side, who have been unconvincing for quite some time.Despite this, Real Madrid are not expected to make any additions to their squad in January, which has understandably worried fans, especially with an exhausting schedule of games ahead for a team that appears out of form and lacks depth.
According to SPORT, Xavi said following Barcelona's away win over Atletico Madrid:
"These are three crucial points. We knew how to be miserable (after). It is critical to have kept a clean sheet. We got three points despite not playing well. It was a difficult game, but it was a big win.
"It's not just three points; it's a huge morale boost. I am extremely proud of the team. We have declared that we are candidates.Xavi makes a statement as Barcelona takes a three-point lead over Real Madrid.
The truth is that there is still a lot of football to be played, and a three-point lead at the top of the table is insignificant in the grand scheme of things.
At the same time, one cannot deny that Real Madrid's recent form, as well as that of some key players, has been extremely concerning. If things continue in this manner, the club may have a difficult time catching up to Xavi's side. One can only hope that they get back on track as soon as possible. The Catalan giants' confidence must have soared after their win over Atletico Madrid, as they have struggled against top opposition all season, losing to the likes of Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Inter Milan.
