Chelsea's season reached a new low and turned mutinous after they were defeated for the second time in four days by Manchester City.
After a 1-0 Premier League defeat on Thursday, the Blues came out with their heads held high, but they were dominated in a 4-0 FA Cup defeat on Sunday.
Chelsea have now exited both domestic cup competitions at the first round for the first time in 34 years. They are ten points outside the top four in the Premier League and are in serious danger of missing out on Champions League qualification. Many Chelsea fans in the away end appeared to have left the Etihad Stadium after Phil Foden put their team 3-0 down at the end of the first half.
However, many fans returned in the second half, chanting the names of former Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich and ex-manager Thomas Tuchel.
After a 6-0 defeat at the Etihad Stadium in 2019, Chelsea fans turned on Maurizio Sarri. This time, they went after Potter as well as co-owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake.Despite spending over £300 million on transfers since Boehly and Clearlake took over from Abramovich last year, Chelsea appear to be in decline.
Unfortunately, the owners were forced to conduct transfer business alongside Tuchel, whom they fired in January due to a strained working relationship.
There are questions about whether Marc Cucurella, Kalidou Koulibaly, or Wesley Fofana were worthwhile signings in the rush to replace Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has also been a disaster signing, and he was absent from the Chelsea squad at the Etihad due to a minor injury, according to Chelsea.
It put Potter in an awkward position, forcing him to start two academy players in defense, 19-year-old debutant Bashir Humphreys and 18-year-old Lewis Hall. After five major finals in six years, it appears that everyone at Chelsea, both past and present, bears some responsibility for how this season is turning out.
The first season of the new era appears to be trophy-less.
Many disgruntled fans have had enough, and many believe that the new regime is to blame rather than the old.
