Wesley Sneijder believes that Manchester United's acquisition of Wout Weghorst must be a "stunt" because he is so shocked by the deal.
It's safe to say that most people were taken aback when they learned over the weekend that United was interested in signing Weghorst for a loan deal until the end of the season.
At first, the concept itself seemed ludicrous, but then there he was—the Dutch striker, appearing to bid Besiktas farewell.
He's now on loan in Turkey, but after scoring over the weekend, it appeared as though he was prepared to leave for Old Trafford.
According to rumors, the striker's current short-term contract may be purchased for just £2.5 million.
To refute those allegations, Besiktas issued a statement that read, "The initiative involving Wout Weghorst belongs wholly to Besiktas Gymnastics Club."
Despite this, Erik ten Hag's club appears to be moving on with plans to sign the Burnley midfielder until the end of the current campaign.
Although some may view it as shrewd business on the part of the club, former Netherlands player Sneijder is obviously unimpressed.
He said to VP, "I think they've seen the trick with the free kick [in the World Cup quarterfinal versus Argentina], therefore they don't fall for that in England anymore."
"Is he genuinely the striker United have been yearning for?
In my opinion, no.
"There are still 300 of them playing in the Premier League.
It has to be an act.
This simply cannot be the case."
During Netherland's World Cup quarterfinal match against Argentina, Weghorst came off the bench and had a significant influence.
The 30-year-old tied the score after his team fell behind 2-0 by scoring twice, one of which came from an absurd free-kick maneuver in the final second of injury time.
In the end, Louis van Gaal's team lost on penalties, and Argentina won the World Cup in a second shootout.
Fans of the Premier League were undoubtedly surprised by Weghorst's influence because they had saw him struggle while he was playing for Burnley the previous season, where he only managed to score twice in 20 games.
However, Marco van Basten actually urged United to recruit an even more unexpected Dutch striker, recommending Luuk de Jong in his place.
Although in the past it has usually been a player who now plays for United, it is not the first time a former Dutch star has failed to impress them.
Rafael van der Vaart has repeatedly attacked Harry Maguire, claiming the defender tells his wife he's "sh*t at football" when he gets home.
