The European Cup was a pure knockout competition that debuted in 1955 and came before the UEFA Champions League. The participating teams in the first five seasons were determined by L'Equipe, a French football magazine. 


The competition has been won by Spanish teams an amazing 19 times, making them the undisputed kings. Italian teams have won the competition 12 times, while English teams are second with 14 championship victories.

A professional football team called Liverpool Football Club was established in Liverpool, England, in 1892. It belongs to a group of five clubs that have won five or more Champions League titles. More than any other British team, the club has won fourteen international and European trophies since 1964, including six UEFA Champions League championships in 1977, 1978, 1981, 1984, 2005, and 2019.

In the Champions League, AC Milan has triumphed seven times (the first in 1963 and the last in 2007). Milan was the first Italian team to qualify for the European Cup in 1955. More than any other Italian team, AC Milan has won the Champions League. The only team with the second-highest number of Champions League trophies is Milan.

Real Madrid is the most recent Champions League champion. They have won 14 European Cups and have dominated both domestically and beyond Europe. Real Madrid is the best team to ever play in the European Cup. 


In 2022, they overcame Liverpool and went on to win the title. The club did, however, win the championships in the following years: 1955–1956; 1956–1957; 1957–1958; 1959–60; 1961–1963; 1964–1965–66; 1980–81; 1997–1998; 1999–2000; 2001–2002; 2013–14; 2015–16; 2016–17; 2017–18; and 2021–2022.


The Union of Europe sponsors the UEFA Champions League, an annual football cup competition. The inaugural season was 1955–1956. Up to 1992, the competition was known as the European Cup or European Champions' Cup (formally known as the European Champion Clubs' Cup). 


Real Madrid, which has won the Champions League 13 times, including the initial competition in 1956, holds the record for the most titles.
