While many of them have retired, a new generation of European goalkeepers is emerging as a force to be reckoned with. Many African players have excelled in every major football league, and African goalkeepers have not been left behind. The previous season was highlighted by the outstanding play of the goaltenders. Based on their performance in 2022, the following African goalkeepers should be considered among the best in 2023.
1. Edouard Mendy
He began 2022 as Senegal's African Cup of Nations champion, but he has since been unable to maintain consistent form for either club or nation. Even at the World Cup, he allowed seven goals in four games, this time in Qatar. There is a great deal of excitement.
Yassine Bounou
The 31-year-old Sevilla goalkeeper, who played in the 2022 World Cup, has already established himself as Africa's best performer, both at the club and international levels. The World Cup was held in Qatar, and Bounou advanced to the semi-finals without losing a single match. His only goal came as an own goal in the third game of the group stage against Canada. He allowed three goals in seven World Cup games, including two in the deciding 2-1 loss to Croatia. The Moroccans will undoubtedly have high expectations in 2023.
3. Andre Onana
André Onana was so good at Ajax that Inter Milan signed him, and he is now widely regarded as Europe's best African goalkeeper. He announced his retirement from the Cameroonian national team after unexpectedly leaving the team's camp during the World Cup in Qatar. Onana's 2023 season with his club team could be exciting.
Mohammed El Shenawy
El Shenawy, 34, could be nearing the end of his career, but he could also be embarking on a new and exciting chapter in his footballing life.
Although the Egyptian international may struggle to gain international attention, he may be able to do so once the 2023 African Nations Championship begins in Algeria.
Dennis Onyango
Onyango, who will be 37 by the start of the CAF Champions League in 2023, is still a force to be reckoned with in the South African league. He has 82 caps for Uganda and will be captain until his international retirement in 2021. Dennis Onyango is well-known for his quick reactions and penalty-saving abilities.
