Enock Mwepu, a former midfielder for Brighton, is reportedly recovering in a hospital after having a health scare.

According to GOAL, the former Premier League player is being treated for a heart problem in his own country.
According to reports, he drove himself to the hospital after experiencing some difficulty.

The Zambian Observer reported earlier today that Mwepu was taken to the University Teaching Hospital on Sunday morning after what was believed to be a heart attack.

The event allegedly occurred when Mwepu was driving toward Kabangwe, a town outside of Lusaka, the capital of Zambia, according to the Zambian media.
In fact, his car is said to have been seen swerving on a busy street.

However, a source told GOAL that Mwepu did not have a heart attack and did not pass out while driving as had been previously claimed; rather, he had a cardiac issue.

He reportedly felt good enough to communicate with doctors in the UK.

Mwepu, who was a standout in the middle for Brighton last season, was forced to retire in October at the age of just 24 due to a hereditary cardiac issue.

October's diagnosis for Mwepu

After receiving a rare heart condition diagnosis in October, Mwepu was warned that if he kept playing, he may experience a possibly fatal cardiac episode.

"The illness, which can deteriorate over time, would put Enock at an extremely high risk of experiencing a possibly catastrophic cardiac episode if he were to continue playing competitive football," Brighton stated in a statement at the time.

Prior cardiac screening exams, which top-level athletes usually have every season, did not reveal the health issue.

He became ill while traveling to meet his Zambian teammates, which revealed the problem.

Mwepu announced his resignation in a touching tweet that began: "A child from a small Zambian community called Chambishi has some news to give.
By the grace of God, he was able to fulfill his dream of playing professional football because he was unwavering in his will to do so.

"However, some dreams must come to an end, so it is with sadness that I declare that, in accordance with the medical advice I have received, I must hang up my boots.
But my participation with football will continue in some way; this is not the end of it.

The Zambian FA, my wife and family, my agent 12MAN, all of my past clubs, my teammates, and coaches—especially everyone at Brighton and Hove Albion—are all to be thanked for their support during my football career.

Mwepu would return to Brighton as a coach for their under-9 squad after retiring, it was revealed in December.
